Using Theory of Change to create an Impact Framework at a major life sciences charity

CASE STUDY

Walcott Communications was approached by leading life sciences charity, LifeArc, to help them develop an organisational framework for monitoring and evaluating the impact of their activity. The challenge was creating a framework that could accurately capture and report on impacts achieved along the translational pathway before it reaches the ultimate impact on patients.

Over 2022-2024, we delivered an ambitious suite of work packages, including:

  • Using Theory of Change to develop a vision for impact for each health theme within the charity, working across chronic respiratory infections, motor neurone disease, global health, and rare diseases;

  • Identifying the charity’s impact goals, domains, pathways, and indicators at both the organisational and challenge levels;

  • Creating a bespoke guidance library, including how to develop, communicate, and operationalise a Theory of Change within the organisation;

  • Developing a monitoring and evaluation framework to ensure impact remains an integral, embedded part of BAU going forward.

The project has been transformative for LifeArc. The organisation has particularly appreciated the WCL Way of developing an inclusive, bespoke culture for impact that reflects the diverse qualities of each organisation.
Walcott Communications really helped us build something that was unique to us, and that really resonates with our people, rather than just doing something off the shelf. I think that’s really helped people to understand it, to buy into it, and will really help us implement it within the organisation.
