Impact Case Study Development
We are highly experienced in developing and optimising impact case studies for research evaluation exercises. Since 2012 WCL has worked on 100s of case studies for the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) the Hong Kong Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and Portugal’s FCT research assessment framework.
We have a range of services to suit different budgets and levels of support needed, from workshops that demystify case study construction to working with individual authors over multiple iterations to develop and refine their impact narratives.

Supporting Impact Case Study Authors
We have extensive experience working with case study authors to maximise the potential of their impact case studies. From teams with a well-developed case study draft seeking a professional, external review before submission to those wanting the full, iterative impact case study review, editing and development process, we provide In-depth, personalised support and guidance across all stages.

ICS Writing Workshops
and Retreats
Drafting an impact case study is a time consuming iterative process that needs a good understanding of what the panel reviewers are looking for. For those writing their first REF impact case study we have a half-day interactive workshop that explains the components of a REF ICS, what sets apart a low ranking from a high ranking ICS and how to optimise a case study within the boundaries of resource and impact maturity. For those institutions with high-potential impact case studies that want to carve out dedicated time for their authors to work on drafting their case studies and receive expert guidance and feedback, we facilitate full-day writing retreats. Providing a structured approach to developing impact narratives using the ICS template, authors will receive personalised support on their work over the course of the day.

Delivered online by a team with deep experience in REF impact, this online session has been specifically designed to support individual researchers and REF impact case study authors at institutions with a small number of planned submissions in as cost-effective and accessible way as possible.
Places are limited to facilitate a fully interactive session. To find out more or to discuss a bespoke session for your research team at your institution, please contact us.
