HOW TO WRITE AN IMPACT CASE STUDY

ONLINE WORKSHOP
18 MARCH 2026
13:30-16:00 GMT

Typing on Laptop

The amount of resource available to invest in REF2029 preparation varies dramatically across the sector and is being exacerbated by financial pressures of the last couple of years. To offer some practical guidance, we have adapted our popular How to Write an Impact Case Study workshop for online delivery to specifically support individual researchers and impact case study authors at smaller institutions.

During this session you’ll learn about the REF template and what is expected, tips on how to approach each section, and use examples from case studies to understand why some do better than others (spoiler: the maturity of the impact matters above all - reach and significance - but how the narrative is constructed, written and the quality of the evidence used really does matter too).

What we'll cover

  • Technical requirements of REF impact and the impact case study template

  • Key characteristics of top ranking impact case studies

  • How impact case studies are assessed and expectations of impact across the panels

  • How to maximise the potential of your impact

By the end of the session you will

  • Be familiar with the components that make a material difference to the potential rating of a REF ICS

  • Understand how the REF impact case study differs to other impact narratives

  • Have reflected on what you need to do to maximise the potential of their research impact

  • Had the opportunity to start drafting your ICS summay.

Ideal for

Individual researchers and case study authors at smaller institutions who are submitting a small number of impact case studies.
